For the past 8 years, our family has been sponsoring a girl in Colombia.
Her name is Linda, and she was 9 years old when we started this amazing journey. Today she is 17, and through the years, we have been able to build a very special relationship with her by means of letters and photographs.
On August 8, 2012 we had the privilege of meeting her in person. The experience was overwhelming, to say the least. Without a doubt, one of the happiest days we’ve ever lived.
And the reason why we feel this way is because this is the kind of love that only God can put in our hearts. Being able to look deep into her eyes, hug her and hear her voice was amazing. We cried and expressed our mutual love. We met her family, went to her humble house, and met the people at her community.
She is very thankful for these years of opportunities and we are very thankful for the opportunity to share the love of Jesus with her.
But The Lord wasn’t done yet. By walking and looking through the neighborhood and by talking to the community leaders, we learned that there is a huge need. There are about 300 children in that community, most of them as young as 2 years old, that do not have access to the church-based program that Linda has enjoyed for years. They don’t have the financial resources to enroll in this life-changing experience and the church doesn’t have the capacity to cover the costs. These families live on very limited incomes which allow them to just meet their very basic needs. We met some of these children. They are precious, as any other child.
We left the neighborhood a few hours later with mixed feelings. We were so grateful to The Lord for giving us the blessing of meeting and sharing with these wonderful people.
On the other hand, there was a burden in our hearts and a question that couldn’t leave our minds: What can we do to help?
God answered this question and on August 15, 2012, His Children International was born. Our initial goal is to provide the means for these 300 children to enroll in the program. After that goal is fully met, we plan to reach other communities as The Lord guides.
Amazing how God works. Never in a million years we thought that the decision to sponsor a child will have this kind of impact in our lives!!
